Last week after several days of lousy weather we headed outside to play in the afternoon sun.
I grabbed some loose parts on my way out and placed them in a basket next to a nice big puddle.
DW discovered the basket first. Egg cartons and shells became boats.
Once his sister arrived, jumping in the puddle and splashing her became first priority.
Miss Pea built a ramp and a sea side village. They played until it became too cool but they did come back to the basket the next day and the next...
I'm often surprised and delighted by the creativity that is sparked by loose parts play. My kids will ignore their toys while playing with a pile of pine cones and fabric for days.
The best part is it's super easy to throw together a simple invitation to play with loose parts . Two great posts which have caught my eye recently are Exploring Loose Parts and Mirror Play by Ness at One Perfect Day and Chalkboard and Loose Parts Kate at Picklebums.
